Maulana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri

Maulana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri (1852–1927) was a Hadith master of extraordinary erudition and a key figure in the Deoband network of scholar-activists who opposed British colonial rule. Born in Nanauta, the same town that produced Muhammad Qasim Nanautavi, he studied under the founding generation of Darul Uloom Deoband and became a disciple of Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki, whose anti-colonial militancy deeply influenced him. His commentary on Sunan Abi Dawud, titled Badhl al-Majhud, remains one of the most respected works of Hadith scholarship in the Indian subcontinent.

Saharanpuri was not content to be merely a scholar of texts. He actively participated in the anti-colonial networks that connected Deoband to revolutionary movements across northern India. A co-founder of Mazahir Uloom in Saharanpur — a sister seminary to Deoband — he helped expand the institutional infrastructure that would produce generations of scholar-activists committed to both Islamic learning and national liberation. His close relationships with Mahmud Hasan Deobandi and other leaders of the Silk Letter conspiracy placed him within the inner circle of Deoband's anti-colonial strategy.

When Mahmud Hasan was arrested and exiled to Malta for his role in the Silk Letter Movement, Saharanpuri maintained the seminary network and continued the work of anti-colonial mobilization through religious education. He spent his later years in Medina, where he continued to teach and write, maintaining correspondence with his disciples in India and urging them to persevere in the struggle for freedom. He died in Medina in October 1927, a scholar whose life bridged the worlds of prophetic tradition and political resistance.
