Tipu Sultan

Tipu Sultan, the "Tiger of Mysore," was the most relentless adversary the British East India Company faced in 18th-century India. Inheriting his father Hyder Ali's military genius, he transformed Mysore into a formidable sovereign power — one of the few Indian kingdoms that dared to stand firm against colonial expansion. Educated in Kannada, Persian, Arabic, and French, and trained from boyhood on the battlefield, Tipu combined intellectual breadth with battlefield brilliance in a manner that astonished both allies and enemies.

More than a warrior, Tipu was a modernizer far ahead of his time. Ascending the throne in 1782, he revolutionized Mysore's administration, currency, and economy, establishing state trading enterprises, promoting sericulture, and forging diplomatic missions to the Ottoman Empire, Qajar Iran, France, and Afghanistan. His iron-cased Mysorean rockets represented a leap forward in artillery technology. He was not merely fighting the British — he was building a state capable of standing as an equal among nations.

Tipu fought four Anglo-Mysore Wars, often alongside French allies, and repeatedly drove British forces to the negotiating table. In 1799, when the British, Marathas, and Nizam of Hyderabad converged on Srirangapatna, he refused every offer of surrender. He died on 4 May 1799, sword in hand, on the ramparts of his fortress. A famous saying traditionally attributed to him declares: "It is better to live one day as a tiger than a thousand years as a jackal." He remains a towering icon of resistance — a ruler who chose death over submission, and whose roar still echoes through the history of India's struggle against colonial rule.
